Hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo result from the damage of mechanosensory hair cells (HCs) located in sensory epithelium of the cochlea and vestibular organs of the inner ear. HCs do not regenerate. Currently, hearing aids and cochlear implants are the only treatments to address hearing loss, and both options provide mild relief. The challenge in developing new therapies and screening ototoxic agents is that the cochlear and vestibular sensory epithelium are isolated deep in the inner ear. Invasive measures are required to access the sensory epithelium. KU researchers have endeavored to create both cochlear and vestibular sensory epithelium outside of the body. They are developing a model platform where the cochlear and vestibular sensory epithelium can be grown outside of the body for testing and developing new diagnostics, screening ototoxic agents, and evaluating new therapies. No such model currently exists. Thus, this technology has the potential to take a leap forward in the advancement of medicine for hearing disorders.

A mechanical barrier system for reducing infections associated with intravascular catheters. The invention reduces the risk of bacterial contamination of the outer surface of the catheter at the skin entry site, which in turn prevents more serious infections caused by the spread of bacteria down the surface of the catheter into the bloodstream. The barrier device functions by forming an occlusive "boot" at the skin exit site and relies on use of a cyanoacrylate adhesive to complete the occlusive junction between the boot and the contaminated skin.  At time of device removal, the device-adhesive bond is safely broken through a novel bladder release method, allowing for safe removal of the vascular catheter.

Currently there are no good treatment options for individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As a result, the two year survival rate after diagnosis is only 10%. Thus, novel therapeutic agents are needed that effectively treat pancreatic cancer.
 
The current invention is novel crocetinic analogs that have showed reduced proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells and inhibited metastasis in pancreatic cancer mouse model. These analogs carry out this function by targeting key factors that function in pancreatic cancer tumor growth. The analogs are stable and non-toxic.
